Baker Music featured in Essential Style for Men Posted on February 6, 2012 2:57pm

Sometimes the most amazing outcomes have the humblest beginnings.

In our particular case, this piece started out by a simple email from BAKER’s, PR Managers’, assistant.

“We represent an artist that has a great sense of style and we think would be a great match to your online magazine. You have a music section right?”

Right.

So we performed our due diligence and checked out his official website http://www.bakermusic.com/ to see what we were getting ourselves into.

Upon review, we thought to ourselves: Great website. Good looking dude. Nice sense of style.

But the thing that really got us interested was the song (ALL I'M GONNA SAY).

We actually listened to it a few times and the main reason this song piqued our interest was because it sounded like something which was already getting airplay on the radio.

But it wasn’t.

So we thought to ourselves, he’s got the look, he’s got a classic sense of style and he’s got the music. Why wouldn’t ESM take this opportunity to feature what could possibly be the next big thing?

As we dug deeper, we found out more information that got us excited about featuring BAKER.
- His family owns and operates one of the oldest men’s custom clothiers in the United States
- His dad races vintage Porsches on the East Coast
- He’s a Harvard grad who is also a classical cellist

Finally, he has songs like CONVINCE ME.

For us here at ESM, BAKER’s music is the amalgamation of style, the best in pop music and a persona that has every possibility to become very successful in the music industry.

Right now, it’s just a matter of time and exposure. And we’ve got #2 handled.

4 OUT OF 5: BAKER ON NEW YORK by BlackBook Posted on February 2, 2012 1:05pm

Baker is a pop singer from New York. This is his take on four places he likes, and one place he doesn't.

RECOMMENDED

Top of the Standard - "A.k.a. the Boom Boom Room. A classic. Beautiful people, beautiful space, and a great vibe."

Electric Room - "This place is beneath the Dream Downtown. It's very different than other places because even though it's in the super-clubby Meatpacking District, they often play alternative or punk music and make great drinks. If fist-pumping isn't for you, this is the place to be."

Simyone Lounge - "A.k.a. SL. This club can get a little intense sometimes with security and lists, but once you're inside, it's a lot of fun."

The Westway - "My favorite spot. There's always a great mix of people there, and they play the best music. I've never had a bad night there."

NOT SO MUCH

Cielo - "A club in the Meatpacking District. You'll never see someone who lives in Manhattan inside those doors."

AN ARTIST TO KEEP AN EYE ON! Posted on January 2, 2012 1:08pm

Last night I finally got to see one of my good friends, Chris Baker, perform live! He lives in New York but he had his LA debut show at Molly Malones in West Hollywood last night, and let me tell you, he blew me away. I have only seen Chris perform in his music videos (see below), and they are no comparison to seeing him live. Don’t get me wrong, his music videos are amazing, but watching him live you can feel Chris’ stage presence demanding everyone in the audience’s attention with ease. He has the presence and engaging qualities of a natural star. But the best part is that you can tell how much he loves what he is doing. His passion really shines through and that’s what makes him a true artist. When he is performing his energy floods the room and you feel as though you are experiencing all that joy and happiness with him. Not to mention his voice is incredible, even his little serenade of Happy Birthday to one of his friends in the audience during the performance was heart melting.

Chris is like the more relatable male-version of Lady Gaga with his addictive electronic beats and edgy style. He rocked the stage last night in some incredible silver metallic Maison Martin Margiela sneakers, and a silver-studded black leather jacket. Oh and did I mention he went to Harvard?

Overall, I could not be more proud of and happy for Chris. He’s come such a long way. It was only a year or so ago that he was belting out songs and madly typing lyrics on his Blackberry when we were in Croatia together. Now he is performing on both coasts, has his EP out, as well as several music videos, and is more passionate and driven than ever. Go Baker!!

Watch out for Chris, he is definitely going to be a star of the music industry in the near future.

Baker Performs For CMJ 2011 At Arlene's Grocery Posted on October 26, 2011 1:49pm

In the early hours of Sunday morning, Arlene's Grocery on Stanton Street was the setting where No Pulp Music hosted a showcase for electro-pop singer, Baker, as part of CMJ 2011.

The Manhattan born and raised, Harvard graduate, played a 45 minute set to close out CMJ 2011 and did so to a room packed full of fans. He joined the No Pulp line up along with other artists such as Skizzy Mars, The Bottom Dollars and Hollis Brown.

Part of his set included his debut single 'Echo' which was a popular choice with the crowd.

Though we love the ruling ladies of the current pop scene, it isn't hard to notice that the Y chromosome has been absent from it for quite some time (unless, of course, you count a certain 17-year-old heartthrob with a lesbian haircut). Christopher Baker would like to change that. The Harvard graduate and musician, who performs only as "Baker," is set on bringing back a rare specimen: the male pop star. Baker, who grew-up in New York City, comes with an unlikely pop-star background that includes studying classical cello and performing in a collegiate a cappella group. His upcoming debut album, however, brims with squiggly synths and big, poppy hooks. And his sights are set high. ... The easy-on-the-eyes singer says he's looking to produce "the catchiest, most danceable pop album ever." We chatted with Baker last week as he laid down new tracks in the studio with producers Cutfather and Damon Shape (the guys behind some of Kylie Minogue's and Jennifer Lopez' most memorable tunes).

Your background is pretty high-brow -- you've been a classic cellist for most of your youth and played Carnegie Hall. Why did you want to get into the pop music world? It seems like a drastic change.

Definitely. As a cellist since the age of five, my musical background is pretty traditional. But, as a singer, I grew up listening to late '90s and early aughts pop, so I couldn't imagine doing anything else. That said, my classical roots often inform the melodies or beats that I put in a song. I haven't played the cello in a while but I can see working with a string quartet or an entire orchestra one day.

Did your training as an a cappella singer at Harvard influence you at all?

So much. I was lucky enough to have solos that really challenged me as a singer and made me explore different parts of my range I never knew I had. And acappella showed me how to layer vocals and construct harmonies that can really elevate a song.

Right now, female pop stars are mostly emphasizing empowerment to their listeners. What do you think is the role of a male pop star?

I see pop music as something that transcends gender or race or sexuality or politics. Anyone can be an empowering figure if they have a voice, something to say that's unique to them, and that's certainly what I intend to share as well.

Who were some of your favorite male pop artists growing up?

I definitely owe a lot to Elvis and Bowie. Kanye West is a visionary and he continually amazes me. And Jack White has been a huge influence. Every project he's involved in is so diverse -- a true original. I'm influenced by their music and their style but, more than anything, those guys' "fuck you" attitudes inspire me. You may love it or hate it, but they're gonna do what they believe in.

Is the on-stage persona of "Baker" any different from real-life Christopher?

They blend together! I actually feel most like myself onstage. There's no room for the timidity or self-consciousness that can happen in real life.

The music industry has morphed in recent years due to file-sharing and YouTube. Do you think the Internet makes things easier or harder for new artists to be discovered?

It definitely makes things more democratic. People in places all over the world have discovered my music because of Facebook and YouTube and music blogs. I've never performed or been on the radio in Finland or Mexico or Japan but there are people there that have me on their iPods and that's pretty awesome.

You're currently in the studio with Cutfather and Damon Sharpe laboring away on your first album. What can we expect from it and when will it be released?

My debut album is gonna be nothing but fat beats and big hooks. Music for the car, the gym, the stage, everywhere. And I'm hoping to have it done and released by the end of this year or early next year.

You live in L.A. As a native New Yorker, was it hard to adjust to life on the West Coast?

L.A. is great and the laid-back stereotype is real. I've become less neurotic and high-strung living out here. I'm still a terrible driver though...

Baker performs live tomorrow night, July 28th, at Sullivan Hall. 8 p.m.

New Music Friday – Baker, by Holly Stafford Posted on May 18, 2011 4:20pm

From Harvard graduate to pop artist, New York native Baker is poised to become an unstoppable force in the industry. With striking model looks, infectious tracks and an unparalleled work ethic Baker’s potential is undeniable. Check out his music video for “All I’m Gonna Say” (co starring Alessandra Torresani) and let the rhythm get inside your mind!

ABOUT BAKER: The question of where to find a sexy, soulful, powerful male pop star has yet to find a definitive answer. Sure, there have been a slew of artists that critics and fans see as THE male pop star of the 21st century; however, the names we’re all familiar with rely mostly on R&B and end up being more Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Boys II Men than David Bowie or George Michael. As a product of the DIY era, Baker draws on the latter as his musical inspiration, and it has already helped separate him from the pack. It was growing up as a cellist and performing all over his native New York, including Carnegie Hall recitals, singing in school musicals and choirs and, ultimately, as a student at Harvard in one of the university’s acapella groups that allowed him to discover his sound and find the path he would follow.

Baker explains, “Pop music has always resonated with me, and it was the people I met in the studio that helped me figure out why. I’ve been lucky so far, and feel blessed that I have met such a diverse and talented creative group of people in the industry.”

While New York will always be home, Baker has taken up roots in LA where he splits his time. It was his summer in LA before senior year in 2008 that Baker met a DJ and producer Kelly Cole that led him to record the up-tempo, soulful dance cover of Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box”.

Baker’s debut single and video “Echo” is already buzzing online. ... Baker is a class act with a professional work ethic that makes him both an anomaly and a perfect example of his generation.

Baker is positioning the pieces to make 2011 his breakout year. He’s looking to craft “the catchiest, most danceable pop album ever” for his forthcoming release and to ensure that people all over the world will be able to relate the music to their lives listening to the radio or dancing in clubs.

Baker is currently in the studio with Cutfather and Damon Sharpe (Kylie Minogue, The Pussycat Dolls, The Saturdays, Jennifer Lopez).
